Third Age Knitting Bus Project

Third Age Knitting Bus Project

2012 International Year of Active Ageing & Intergenerational Solidarity.

The Third Age Knitting Bus Project aims to promote happy and meaningful contact between the generations and to raise awareness of Third Age. It builds on Third Age’s long established Trauma Teddy Knitting initiative, where older people teach primary school children to knit.

In the Knitting Bus project every primary school in Ireland will be invited to knit for Third Age, will have access to the Trauma Teddy stuffed toy pattern, and other knitting patterns specially created for pupils Irish designer, Aideen Bodkin. Third Age through web site support will encourage schools to invite parents and grandparents into 5th and 6th class during the next school year to teach the children to knit, culminating in an exhibition of class work, and an imaginative fund-raiser benefiting your school and Third Age.

The highlight is our Knitting Bus, a double-decker encased in its own colourful knitted coat, (with space for windows!) which visit schools where class work exhibitions are being held and show our support.

The Knitting Bus will celebrate 2012 International Year of Active Ageing and Intergenerational Solidarity in which all EU member countries are invited to participate. With our Project’s emphasis on engaged older people passing on skills to school children in an atmosphere of friendly exchange and mutual learning, we feel it perfectly matches the spirit and mood of this Year. Will you knit with us?
