Health & Fitness

Encouraging members to keep as well as possible and to be well informed about health is central to the work of Third Age, and our health initiatives offer both participation and information. There is increasing evidence of the value of physical activity for older people in relation to maintaining independence, disease prevention and management, improved quality of life and psychosocial benefits. Our health programmes aim to provide opportunities and encouragement to older people to become, and remain fit – and have some fun along the way.

Accordingly, a wide variety of tailored exercise and activity programmes are organised at regular intervals, particularly under the Go for Life programme. The Third Age had a lead role in the introduction of the Tone Zone programme in Ireland. We also offer a monthly chiropody service for members, a reflexology service and a regular yoga class

The Third Age organises a major health initiative annually. These have included a dental and oral health programme, women's health and men’s health programmes, optical screening, and helping people with disabilities to optimise their situation. All initiatives are based on the identified needs and aspirations of members. Participation levels are high and the feedback has been very positive.

In more recent years the focus has been on illness prevention and health promotion. Programmes provided factual information on self-help steps to improve one’s own health and well-being through regular check ups, exercise, meditation, relaxation, nutrition and making positive lifestyle choices.
