As part of its lifelong learning philosophy, Third Age believes that older people should have an opportunity to become familiar with modern technology. Accordingly some years ago we began Information Technology classes which led to the opening of a weekly Internet Cafe.
Our early IT classes were supported by Community Application of Information Technology, (CAIT) Training was developed specifically to meet the needs, aspirations and competencies of members. The curriculum included word processing, spread sheets, use of e-mail and Internet.
Our classes currently take place twice a week and remain well attended. They have been the catalyst for other initiatives including our Living History school project. Members have also participated in a UK conference via web cam.
Our classes have led to the opening of an Internet Café which operates every Monday afternoon with funding support from the Department of the Taoiseach’s e-Inclusion Fund. Three laptops are available. Members and friends drop in, access the Internet and know they can ask assistance from staff if needed.
The Internet Café aims to bridge the digital divide, encourages older people to expand their knowledge base, keep in touch with friends and relatives abroad, research hobbies and interests, locate good holiday offers and value flights, download application forms and access general information.
Supporting the work of Third Age benefits people of all ages throughout Ireland.
