During the ‘Reflections’ project it was discovered that children were no longer taught knitting in school. This led to some members beginning a series of knitting lessons in the classroom. The children initially created scarves, blankets and cushions. Eventually they became more adventurous and began knitting ‘Trauma Teddies, hand knitted teddies in bright colours dressed in jumper and scarves. These are now carried in the Irish Ambulance Service and presented to children who use the ambulance service to take them to hospital.
To date over 1,000 handkitted bears have been completed and delivered. In addition to the teddies, the group has knitted hats, scarves and gloves for a charity in Belarus. Currently nine older people and over 100 local children are involved in this knitting project each week of the academic year.
