In your own community you may have seen new faces on the streets in recent years reflecting Ireland's growing multi-ethnic population.
It is likely that the English proficiency of these new residents varies greatly from fluency to having little or no knowledge of the spoken or written word. Daily tasks that we take for granted such as shopping, visiting the doctor, helping children with homework are extremely difficult without a knowledge of the predominant language. You may be interested in volunteering a little time each week to provide voluntary conversational classes in English for this new population. Such involvement is worthwhile, hastens integration and enriches the whole community.
